How is broadband speed measured?

Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) — the higher the Mbps, the faster your connection.

Here’s a quick guide to how much speed you typically need:

General browsing & email: 1–5 Mbps
HD video streaming (e.g. Netflix, YouTube): 5–10 Mbps
4K video streaming: 20–25 Mbps
Online gaming: 10–20 Mbps (higher speeds help reduce lag)
Video calls (Zoom/Teams): 2–5 Mbps (upload speed matters here too)
Working from home / multiple devices: 25 Mbps+ recommended
⚠️ Please note: Your Wi-Fi speed may be lower than your broadband line speed. This is because Wi-Fi performance can be affected by things like distance from the router, walls, or interference from other devices. For the most accurate test, connect your device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
